Our World-wide Indymedia Network

IMCjp is part of the world-wide Network of Independent Media Centres (NIMC), counting over 120 autonomously organized centers publishing in over 20 languages. They use mostly the net, but also using print, radio, video, netstreaming and other media. The first IMC was set up in 1999 to cover the Seattle anti-WTO demonstrations and received more hits than commercial sites covering the events.

The network is held together by Principles of Unity and aMission Statement. Each IMC web site carries the (((i))) logo and a list of all other IMCs on the top page. Anyone can start a new IMC, but has to follow an application process and fulfill certain membership requirements.

The network's face to the world is the multi-lingual global site which especially highlights social movement news from around the world.

The network is administrated by a network of working groups of volunteers who organize through mailing lists, mostly in English. NIMC tries to create a transparent working process, and important documents are found on the Indymedia Documentation site and the archives of the mailing lists. The process is open. Generally, any one is free to join any mailing list and participate in the organizing process, though some limitations apply (IMC-women is open to women only, many 'global lists' require that you are somehow connected to a local IMC).

IMCs also work with other civil society-based media and social movements, e.g. through the OURMedia/NUESTROSMedios Network, the World Social Forums and others.

Our Local and Regional Networks

IMCjp, time and energy permitting, works with other Japan-based and Asian regional media and social movement organizations through linking of articles, content exchange and personal contact. A list of such organizations (and other resources) is in the links section. IMCjp also encourages users to link to other media's (including their own) articles in the otherpress section and translate articles (from or into Japanese). In addition, we try to work with organizations such as Interlocals , a Hong Kong based organization.
