Today, in the concluding event of ten days of G8 protests, hundreds of activists
from three protest camps marched in a demonstration organized by the Ainu, a
disenfranchised indigenous population of Hokkaido, the island where the G8
summit is being held. The march was surrounded by several rows of police the
entire time. Protesters were holding signs in English and Japanese saying "No
G8", and "Japan is a police state".

The World Bank currently funds oil and gas industries to the tune of some $1 billion per year and growing, contributing substantially to global warming. In 2006, oil, gas, and power commitments accounted for 77 percent of the World Bank’s total energy program. Only about 6 percent went to “new renewables,” such as wind, solar, and mini-hydro. Worse, the Bank's International Finance Corporation (which lends to the private sector) is actually growing its fossil fuel lending portfolio.
