High levels of radiation at Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant complex is reported to be a major obstacle to regaining control of four of the six reactors there that lost their cooling systems to the tsunami triggered by the devastating March 11 earthquake. U.S.-made robots that recently entered two of the reactor buildings detected such high levels of radiation preventing workers from being able to make critical repairs to the broken cooling systems. Although the nuclear plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO has estimated that it would take six to nine months to stop radiation leaks at the four broken reactors at Fukushima, many nuclear experts are skeptical. One major problem is the growing evidence that the reactor pressure vessel at Unit 2 may be cracked and leaking nuclear material.
