However, shortly before their departure from France, they were suddenly 'disinvited' by Japanese immigration authorities. Japan refuses entry to foreigners who have served more than 1 year in jail. Negri has served a sentence for 1970's "association and insurrection against the state", after controversial trials earning him international fame as "prisoner of conscience". This was no obstacle for the 22 countries he has visited since his release from jail 2003, including China and Korea, he noted in a letter to supporters. Nonetheless, events were held as planned, with Negri answering pre-scripted questions on the phone. 700 people watched a formal lecture and panel discussion at U Tokyo (Todai) and several hundreds gathered for the 'multitudinous' and colorful events at U of the Arts (Geidai). "Really a shame Negri could not come. A union of undocumented migrant workers, MTU recently had held a mass memorial service for migrants that had died in Korea, and won a precedent-setting case at the Seoul High court which had ruled that the government must accept the legal registration of MTU.
